When it comes to stirring up automotive passion, the Pontiac GTO of 1967 stands as a true legend. From its unassuming inception as an optional upgrade for the Tempest sedan in 1964 to the iconic 1967 GTO model, this inaugural generation of the Pontiac muscle car lineage left an indelible mark in the annals of automobile history.
The 1967 GTO, in particular, shines as a mesmerizing embodiment of the original ‘Goat,’ cherished by its current owner for the past decade. A treasure trove of documentation, including an original build sheet, accompanies this pristine machine, showcasing its journey through time. Notably, this GTO has undergone an extensive restoration, featuring mechanical enhancements and a striking two-stage reapplication of the factory GTO color, Mayfair Maize, which replaced its initial red hue.
The vinyl top and chromatic accents exude excellence, while the interior, adorned with black vinyl bucket seats, has been meticulously rejuvenated to surpass its original splendor. This vintage GTO proudly boasts modern amenities like air conditioning, tinted windows, an Autometer ProComp gauge package complete with a tachometer, and an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo.
A Leap in Power: 1967 GTO’s Enhanced Engine
In the pivotal year of 1967, Pontiac made a significant stride in enhancing the GTO’s performance by elevating the engine displacement from 389 cubic inches (CI) to a commanding 400 CI. The foundation of the GTO’s strength began with the base engine’s output of 335 horsepower, setting the stage for more exhilarating possibilities. The engine roaring beneath the hood of this GTO, however, was meticulously crafted by the skilled hands at Butler Performance in Leoma, TN. With a displacement further expanded to a remarkable 467 cubic inches, this powerhouse underwent a comprehensive mechanical transformation. This included a meticulously balanced rotating assembly, Edelbrock aluminum heads (measuring 2.11” intake and 1.77” exhaust), a robust Comp solid-lifter cam boasting a lift of .564/.571 and a duration of 260/264, lightweight 1.6:1 aluminum roller rockers, a capacious 7-quart oil pan, and ceramic-coated 1-7/8“ tube headers crafted by Doug’s.
Amplifying its aspiration, a single-plane high-rise aluminum intake supports a Holley Demon double pumper, orchestrating a harmonious dance of power and precision. The ignition system, courtesy of MSD, orchestrates the fiery combustion, while the temperature is adeptly managed by a BeCool aluminum radiator. As this fierce GTO propels forward, it channels its vigor through a Pontiac 4-speed manual transmission, seamlessly navigated by a Hurst Competition Plus shifter, and grounded by a positraction differential.
The suspension intricately weaves together coil springs with a robust HD sway bar in the front and a similar setup in the rear, augmented by a classic ‘ladder bar’ traction kit. Empowered by power-assisted steering and 4-wheel drum brakes, this Pontiac icon elegantly rides on period-correct Pacer 5-spoke chrome wheels, elegantly fitted with 15” Firehawk performance radials.
Embracing the Future While Honoring the Past
The presence of this remarkable Pontiac GTO is poised to evoke a sense of pride in its fortunate new owner. Beyond its undeniable prowess on the road, this machine is a tribute to the passion, ingenuity, and craftsmanship that the automotive world represents. It’s a living testament to the symbiotic relationship between modern advancements and the enduring allure of classic design. As the engine roars to life and the GTO glides down the asphalt, it continues to weave its story into the fabric of motoring history, ensuring that the legacy of the Pontiac GTO lives on for generations to come.
