DC Studios’ Wonder Woman was released in 2017, and it was a critical and commercial success. The DC film follows the story of the comic character Diana, princess of the Amazons, played by Gal Gadot. A warrior, trained to be unconquerable, Diana leaves her home to explore the world of men. What many might not know is that Emma Stone was approached to be a part of the franchise.
Raised on an isolated and sheltered island, she meets an American fighter pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the wars waging in the outside world. Diana is convinced she can mitigate the conflict, and leaves the Amazons for the first time in her life. She finds herself fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, and in the process, discovers the extent of her powers and her true destiny.
Emma Stone Dodged A Bullet
After the first film became a cultural touchstone and a huge commercial success, the production of a sequel was inevitable.
Since the end of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, Emma Stone has largely avoided any superhero films. However, the La La Land star received multiple offers, including one in the Wonder Woman franchise.
Previously, there had been lots of talk about the DC character Cheetah turning up as the villain, and it was revealed that Director Patty Jenkins had originally chosen Stone to play the role of Barbara Minerva, aka Cheetah, in Wonder Woman 1984. Ultimately, Emma Stone turned down the opportunity to play another comic book character after her appearance as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man.
Emma Stone definitely dodged a bullet by turning down the role, as the character and storyline of Cheetah just went on to become one of many confusing plot points in the film. Furthermore, Wonder Woman 1984’s box office collections were far from impressive. With the production budget being a whopping $200 million, the film only went on to gross $164 million worldwide at the box office.
Industry sources had expected WW84 to lose north of $100 million at the box office, but in reality, you could easily double that number.
Emma Stone Hesitantly Accepted Role in Spider-Man
While Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield’s chemistry in The Amazing Spider-Man was adored by fans, Stone revealed recently that she wasn’t so sure about joining the cast.
In a state of confusion, she turned to her close friend and trusted ally, Jennifer Lawrence. Despite their hectic schedules, the two remain in touch via texting regularly. When Emma Stone was approached for the role, Lawrence was already a part of a major franchise, The Hunger Games. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the Hunger Games star revealed how the decision came to be made.
Jennifer Lawrence said upon seeing the text from Stone, she replied with ‘F**k Off.’ And apparently, the two have been very close friends since.
“I feel like it was our version of The Notebook — 365 texts,” Lawrence said jokingly. “We both really do love each other and care about each other as people, beyond being actors. I support her completely when it comes to work and I feel the same from her, but I know we’d be friends even if we didn’t do the same job.”
Eventually, Emma Stone took her friend’s advice and accepted the role, which turned out to be a massive success.
