Whether it’s a movie, a potential presidential run, a so-so premium cable show (sorry Ballers stans), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has proven he can sell the people on pretty much anything. And he has sold the public on his latest venture: a sneaker.
Project Rock, Johnson’s collaboration with Under Armour, has historically been successful, whether that’s due to The Rock’s beefy physique or the shoes’ solid design at a low price point (or both!) is unclear. There are plenty of unboxing videos and press clips to support this popularity, so perhaps today’s news isn’t really news at all.
Today, The Rock posted an Instagram caption that began “SOLD OUT in less than 24hrs. THANK YOU. My signature series #ProjectRock1 training shoe is a hot one.” Indeed! The latest Project Rock kick, part of Johnson’s second “Chase Greatness” collection was snapped up as fast as any Nike or Adidas drop (not counting Yeezys).
The shoe features a knit upper and sock-like ankle, a blue guard along the insole, a pebbled white outsole that gradiates into a thin orange band towards the back. As we noted back when it was announced, this is a Memorial Day-appropriate colorway, but done tastefully and in more muted tones than the other red white & blue shoes we’ve seen around today.
The idea of The Rock as a #sneakerinfluencer / hype beast is very much equal parts the 2018 formula: one part celebrity, one part absurd, one part of unthinkable ten years ago, combine, stir, pour over ice. But this foray makes us happy, because The Rock makes us happy. And it also has us wondering what the success of this collab will inspire Under Armour x Dwayne to embark on next. And also whether Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could be the first president in history with a sold-out sneaker collab under his belt.
