Flowering plants brought indoors add a touch of color to any room. Place them in a dingy corner or room to make it look much more alive. It can be a challenge to get a houseplant to flower, but many of today’s most popular houseplants can be purchased mature and in bloom with nothing more than patience or occasional care.

Fuchsia

There are over a hundred different types of fuchsia. Fuchsias have a long flowering period, often extending from summer into fall. The flowers have an attractive, stepped, teardrop-shaped pattern, with four long petals and four short petals.

clívia

This brightening plant is often kept in a pot indoors. There are yellow, red and orange variants, and all have shiny, dark green leaves. Due to its evergreen nature, the Clivia plant can be expected to look healthy and bloom for many years. It has two distinct growing seasons: dormancy (winter) and flowering (spring, summer).

Begonia

Many of the more than 1,800 begonia species are endemic to tropical regions. Indoor variants of this plant are also very fashionable. The begonia is a fantastic houseplant as this particular type blooms all year round. There are a wide variety of begonias to choose from, including Rex begonias, wax begonias, and cane begonias.

The color and shape of the leaves alone make these plants unique. Due to their dark color, these leaves are commonly confused with clovers despite being the same species. When the light becomes too strong or it gets dark, the leaves of a purple clover will close like an umbrella.

zebra plant

The zebra plant, native to Brazil, is named for its striped leaves. Sometimes small golden flowers appear on the bush. The zebra plant stands out for its huge shiny dark green leaves. The zebra plant gets its name from its distinctive white veins. Zebra plants, with their wildly contrasting color patterns, are a great way to inject energy into a dull indoor environment.

Orchid

Orchids get a terrible name because of how difficult they are to grow and bloom. Although mastering your indoor orchid plant may take some time, the end result will be worth it. Orchids have one of the largest populations of flowering plants, with more than 28,000 different species.

anthurium

There are many varieties of anthurium and they can be found in a rainbow of hues. They have some visual similarities to orchids but require much less maintenance. The anthurium will flourish if you give it some specific care.

christmas cactus

The Christmas cactus gets its name because it blooms around Christmas. This plant blooms in a wide range of colors throughout the winter, including red, white, yellow, pink, and purple. Surprisingly, with proper care, the flowers can last for weeks.

Aechmea Fasciata

In addition to its common name, “silver vase plant,” this flowering plant belongs to the bromeliad family. Beautiful and low maintenance, this plant is a popular choice. Bromeliads generally need dappled light and can burn quickly if exposed to bright sunlight.

Golden Shrimp Plant

Outdoors, this plant can reach a height of 6 feet, but in a container it will stay considerably shorter. The leaves of the shrimp plant are large and intricately veined. The flowers of the golden shrimp plant are thin and very yellow.

Amaryllis

The flowers of this plant have a distinctive trumpet shape and their colors range from pink and red to green, blue and purple. Atop the tall, mostly bare stem of this plant is a huge, open flower. These flowers are perfect for both amateur and professional gardeners.

kalanchoe

Technically a succulent plant, the kalanchoe plant is known for its low care requirements. ‘Flaming katy’ is a flower that has a wide spectrum of vivid hues, from magenta and yellow to orange and red to white. The leaves are a deep, shiny green and can be quite enormous.

Hibiscus

The large, spectacular flowers are the plant’s claim to fame. There are a wide variety of hibiscus colors, including yellow, white, pink, peach, and red. If you have a fever, stomach pain, or high blood pressure, try drinking some red hibiscus tea, famous for its healing benefits.

african violet

These gorgeous plants, available in a range of shades of blue and purple, are ideal for brightening up a sparsely decorated room. You can grow them in individual containers or mix several types in a single container.

poinsettia

The brightly colored parts of the poinsettia that we see are actually leaves, referred to as bracts. There’s the traditional Christmas red, as well as some yellows and pinks.
