The songstress put her sartorial mark on the beauty trend emerging from wet, hot American summers

If Dua Lipa’s auburn grunge hairstyle wasn’t enough to prove the British songstress is entering a new era, her latest off-duty look will.
With the pop supernova out and about in London to promote her upcoming single “Houdini”—a track written with Australia’s very own Kevin Parker of Tame Impala—the star has laid the foundation for a 70s psychedelia uniform.
Rather than embrace the kaleidoscopic prints or “groovy” silhouettes of yore, Lipa is putting her signature slinky spin on the era and looking to one of the biggest beauty trends of 2023 to do so.

While attending local radio stations, Lipa put her pop star spin on cherry cola lips by injecting the saccharine trend into fashion’s lexicon.
The beauty trend emerged during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer as a darker antidote to quintessential Americana, drawing inspiration from cherry cola soft drinks. The trend boasts over 79.3 million views on TikTok, but the Lana Del Rey-influenced look was never explored in a sartorial form until now.
Lipa leaned into the burgundy palette with a buttery-leather Bottega Veneta pouch and glossy Bordeaux croc boots. Taking cues from Princess Diana’s royal-on-the-run style, the recent Barbie star tucked a pair of light-wash denim into the calf-grazing boots.
Lipa completed the look with a Jim Morrison-esque white fur coat, combining elements of the golden age of Rock’n’Roll with her trademark Future Nostalgia fashion taste. A look that is both contemporary yet influenced by heritage aesthetics.
Lipa’s first official outing under the ‘DL3’ mode—a term her fans have coined in reference to her next body of work—came in late October.
Lipa appeared at an honourary event for Greta Gerwig in Los Angeles in a black leather dress from Gucci’s 2024 Resort collection—the last for the Italian Maison before creative director Sabato De Sarno took over the reins.
Much can be said about Lipa’s new style, purely because the period is still in its infancy. But based on what we’ve seen so far, it will be one dripping in chic sleaze.
